Sudan - At least 30 people have been reported dead, and 150 are missing following the collapse of a dam in Arbaat.

How many people have been affected by flooding?

The flooding caused by the dam's collapse affected over 20 villages and left about 50,000 people severely impacted.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) told CNN that residents of the villages of Khor-Baraka and Tukar were reportedly forced to flee for safety, and the final death toll could rise significantly.

One resident described the severe flooding resulting from the dam collapse in the region.

“In the area where I’m from, the Tabub area… they told me that all the houses and everything was swept away,” he said.

Videos circulating online show industrial trucks buried in mud and debris, with other vehicles barely recognisable.

Houses are covered with floodwater nearly up to the rooftops, and roads in the affected areas have been rendered impassable.

According to a US News report, heavy rainfall and flooding have affected more than 317,000 people in the month of August.

KwaZulu-Natal flooding

This happens months after a similar flooding incident was experienced in Durban, South Africa.

Heavy rainfall caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure and resulted in the loss of seven lives in the eThekwini metro in KwaZulu-Natal province.

Several others were injured and taken to medical facilities for treatment.

The eThekwini metro endured severe impacts from heavy downpours, resulting in flooded roads, fallen trees, and substantial damage to infrastructure like power lines and roads.

The case was similar to the uThongathi region, located in the northern part of Durban, which saw the highest number of incidents, including severe damage to several homes, roofs being blown off, and trees collapsing on electricity lines, causing power outages.
