“President Azali Assoumani was slightly injured with a knife during the funeral of a great sheikh of the country. His injuries are not serious, and he has returned home,” Ahamada said as reported by Voice of America.

How did the attack on Assoumani happen

BBC reported that the attack occurred as mourners gathered to pay their respects to the late religious leader.

Witnesses said the assailant, a 22-year-old military officer with no prior criminal record, was dressed in a boubou and positioned in the room where the body lay.

The attacker managed to stab the president in the hand before being subdued by another mourner.

A source close to the presidency, speaking on condition of anonymity, reassured that the president had received medical care and was out of danger.

The motive behind the attack is still unclear, and authorities are continuing their investigation.

A source revealed that the assailant, who joined the army in 2022, was an active-duty paramilitary police officer.

Who killed Tom Mboya?

Back home, a 92-year-old man claimed to have participated in the killing of former minister Tom Mboya.

The man alleged that he, alongside two other men allied to KANU, was paid to track and murder the former minister by an individual he declined to name.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation has initiated an investigation and vowed to take the necessary action once the process is complete.
