Egerton University has announced new revised accommodation fees for visiting schools and visitors.

The higher learning institution hiked charges for damaged properties in hostels.

Egerton, a public university, warned students against cohabiting or sub-letting rooms, noting that those found guilty would be fined KSh 10,000 each.

"The university council at its 198th meeting held on Friday, August 2, revised accommodation fees for visiting schools, visitors and surcharges for damages caused by students in the hostels. Students and stakeholders are advised to take note," the notice on its X handle signed by chief halls officer Judith Ofula stated.

The university also increased the charges for waste paper buckets from KSh 200 to KSh 500, hand brooms from KSh 250 to KSh 500, and dust bin buckets from KSh 3,000 to KSh 4,000.

Students who deface walls will no longer paint the entire room but will pay KSh 5,000.

How is HELB disbursed?

In other news, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) broke down how every university programme will be funded under the new funding model.

In a public notice, HELB shared the amount it will pay as a scholarship and loan for each programme, based on the band the student is categorised under.

For instance, a bachelor of arts degree course with an annual fee of KSh 122,400 will see HELB pay KSh 85,680 in scholarships and KSh 30,600 in loans.

Kenyans mourn fallen Egerton students

As reported earlier, The Egerton University fraternity was thrown into mourning following the deaths of two campus ladies who died hours apart.

The female students, identified as Vivian Nasimiyu Wekesa, a fourth-year student and Hannah Wambui, a second-year student, died in separate incidents on August 7 and August 8, 2024.
