New Starlink subscribers will be required to pay an additional fee to access the internet.

SpaceX, the satellite internet service provider, said the congestion fee will be charged to customers in areas experiencing limited network capacity.

When will Starlink users pay congestion fee?

The company, owned by American billionaire Elon Musk, said the congestion fee will be a one-time charge for customers purchasing or activating a new service plan.

"This fee will only apply if you are purchasing or activating a new service plan. If you change your service address or service plan at a later date, you may be charged the congestion fee," said Starlink.

The firm assured that it will no longer charge the fee to new customers once its network capacity improves.

How much is Starlink congestion fee?

According to PC Mag, some customers in the US have already paid a congestion fee of $100 (KSh 12,899, based on the current exchange rate).

This fee depends on the customer's location, and the payment option appears once you subscribe to a new plan.

The company started charging congestion fees in the US, where most people have a huge subscription for satellite internet.

How much does Starlink charge in Kenya?

This came as the company introduced discounted offers in Kenya for new Starlink subscribers.

Kenyans installing unlimited high-speed internet now pay KSh 29,999 for the kit and a KSh 6,500 installation fee.

Subscribers get a minimum monthly plan offer of KSh 1,300 after installing the Starlink internet.

Previously, subscribers used to pay KSh 45,500 for Starlink kit installation.

This came a year after Starlink expanded its reach in Kenya after setting a base in July 2023.
