Emmanuel Wanyonyi produced a sensational last lap to win the men's 800m Diamond League title.

The Olympic champion outsprinted rivals Djamel Sedjati and Marco Arop to win in 1:42.70.

The trio were aiming to smash David Rudisha's world record, with Arop taking an early lead. However, it wasn't to be, as the Canadian faded in the final few metres.

Arop took an early lead and was on track to shatter David Rudisha's 12-year world record. His closest competitors, Wanyonyii and Sedjati, were playing catch-up in the first lap.

The Canadian lost steam in the last 200m as Sedjati, the Olympic bronze medallist, overtook him.

Behind Arop was Wanyonyi, who was slowly closing the gap. The Olympic gold medallist surpassed Arop, the silver medallist and had Sedjati in his sights.

He made one final push and pipped the Algerian on the line to win his second Diamond League title in 1:42.70. Sedjati was second in 1:42.86, while Arop finished third in 1:43.25.

The trio also finished in the top three in last year's final, with the Kenyan winning in 1:42.80, per World Athletics.

Some predicted that Rudisha's world record could be broken this year; however, they fell short and will have to attempt it again next year.
