The statue was removed and later disowned by Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, saying it was done by volunteers.

"The well wishers had promised to deliver surprise statues and unveil them on the evening before the elevation to city status but as we waited we were shocked with what was unveiled,” Bii said.
“What was unveiled was shocking. One side looked like a human being and the other side looked like Satan himself,” via The Star.

Kipyegon and Kenyan medallists from the Paris Olympics received a hero's welcome amid the statue debacle, per BBC.

The Kenyan star returned to the track after bagging her 1500m gold medal in Rome. She comfortably won the women's 1500m at the Rome Diamond League.

After the race, she discussed her plans for the rest of the season and the statue.

"It was a nice celebration going back home and being celebrated by the state after getting good results at the Olympics. It was really nice," via Citius Mag.
