Gor Mahia Player Takes Out Referee With Ferocious Shot In Al Ahly Loss

• Al Ahly won the game 3-0 (6-0 on aggregate) to send the Kenyan champions crashing out of the Champions League

A match official was left on the floor after Gor Mahia goalkeeper Gad Matthews inadvertently hit him with a ferocious strike on September 21.

The centre referee was in charge of Gor Mahia's second-leg encounter of the final round of CAF Champions League preliminary rounds.

The game was held at the packed, 75,000-seater Cairo International Stadium. Al Ahly had a commanding 3-0 advantage after a composed performance in Nairobi last week.

Ahead of the encounter, Gor Mahia's coach, Leo Neiva, was still upbeat that his side could surprise the record African champions. He made a couple of changes, bringing in Samuel Kapen, Shariff Musa, and Mathews from the team that started in Nairobi.

Al Ahly were still the better of the two sides, showing their impeccable class and pedigree. Rahim Rabi capitalised on a poor clearance from Godfrey Ochieng to give the hosts the lead. Wessam Abou Ali doubled Al Ahly's lead after the break.

In the 87th minute, the referee took the full blow of Mathew's fierce clearance. The K'Ogalo custodian came out of his goal hurriedly to close down Kahraba. He beautifully intercepted Kahraba's lob before clearing the ball.

The ball hit the referee right on the head, sending him sprawling on the floor. Mathews seemingly didn't offer an apology as Ochieng and Larence Juma rushed to check if the referee was okay.

Taher Mohamed Taher rounded off the scoring in stoppage time to ensure the African giants punched their ticket to the lucrative group stage.

What next for Gor Mahia?

Sirkal will now turn their attention to retaining their league title. They begin their defence with a clash against Mathare United next weekend.
