Timothy Ouma produced a magnificent show for his side, IF Elfsborg when they kicked off their Europa League campaign on Wednesday night.

The Harambee Stars attacking midfielder scored a screamer before setting up another goal in the second half. His best efforts were, however, not enough as Eflsborg succumbed to a 3-2 defeat to AZ Alkmaar.

The two sides set the ball rolling in the new league phase of Europe's second-tier competition at the AFAS Stadium. Elfsborg's Ahmed Qasem had a goal disallowed for offside in the 11th minute.

A series of poor clearances from Alkmaar saw Simon Hedlund tee up Ouma, who unleashed a rocket-like shot near the edge of the area.

The hosts clawed their way back into the game with Rube van Bommel bagging a brace. Ouma then played a part in his side's second goal, this time turning provider for Hedlund. Troy Parrot scored from the spot to restore Alkmaar's lead.

Ouma was withdrawn in the 78th minute as his side attempted to look for a late equaliser in vain. The 20-year-old has been capped seven times by the national team. He recently played in the two World Cup qualifiers that Harambee Stars registered identical results against Burundi and Ivory Coast.

Elfsborg will resume their Allsvenskan campaign this weekend with an away game against Kalmar before facing AS Roma next week in the Europa League.

Manchester United fumbles at home

The other standout results of the night saw Erik ten Hag's woes continue after his Manchester United side were held to a one-all draw by FC Twente at Old Trafford. Galatasaray beat PAOK 3-1 while Lazio blew away Dynamo Kiev 3-0.

The Al-Nassr star aimed a thinly veiled criticism at Erik ten Hag for his remarks suggesting that Manchester United are not in contention for major titles this season.
