Nairobi—Governor Johnson Sakaja has vowed to continue reforming the county's healthcare system to benefit the residents.

What Sakaja said about reforming healthcare in Nairobi

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke on Tuesday, August 27, Sakaja expressed confidence that his two-year radical plan to transform healthcare was bearing fruits.

Sakaja, who identified healthcare as a key cog in his delivery charter to city residents, said he had ensured the continued flow of medical supplies and commodities to health facilities.

The Nairobi governor pointed out the recent unveiling of a 548-bed Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital in Korogocho, which he said is the largest healthcare facility in the county.

Sakaja reaffirmed his commitment to transforming and modernising health facilities to provide affordable and dignified healthcare services.

"I want to reaffirm my commitment to transforming and modernising county health facilities for the provision of affordable, dignifies and quality healthcare services to Nairobi residents," Sakaja said.

The first-term governor said his radical reforms have improved healthcare infrastructure and steadily provided quality services.

How Sakaja managed to decongest Mbagathi Hospital

Sakaja noted that launching a 3-bed renal and ICU unit at Mama Lucy Hospital helped decongest the Mbagathi Hospital.

In March 2023, the county boss unveiled the first-ever Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Renal Unit, Blood Bank and Children playground at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

"I'm committed to transforming and modernizing the county health facilities through equipping with medical supplies and commodities, human resource and providing essential health equipment for effective service delivery to the people of Nairobi. For instance we have already managed go decongest Mbagathi Hospital after launched several modern services at other health facilities," he added.

Driven by his mantra of providing dignified services to the people, the governor urges health workers to work with an absolute commitment to accelerate service delivery efficiency.

Sakaja's move to employ NMS doctors

Meanwhile, Sakaja agreed to absorb doctors who were previously contracted by the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS).

On Thursday, August 1, Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) secretary general Davji Atellah disclosed that Nairobi county would confirm 115 medical officers on permanent and pensionable terms.

The KMPDU boss thanked the county government for its cooperation and commitment to recognising the important role played by doctors.
