Kariobangi South: 15-Year-Old Boy Starts Looking For Job After He's Sent From School, Mum Falls Sick
  • Malvin Muturi is supposed to be studying at Komarock Secondary School, but he was sadly sent away because of a lack of fees, so he started looking for a job
  • As if that is not heartbreaking enough for a young teen, his mum at home suffers from a condition that causes blood clots, which has made her partially blind
  • Counsellor Juliana Olayo told TUKO.co.ke that Muturi's father took off when their mum was admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital and left them with house rent arrears of seven months

At only 15 years old, a young boy identified as Malvin Muturi is actively looking for a job to look after his ailing mum and siblings.

What is deep vein thrombosis?

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, a counsellor and social activist, Juliana Olayo, shared that she was giving out bursaries in Kariobangi South when the 15-year-old arrived at their office and asked for a job.

"I wanted to know how a young man that is supposed to be in school was seeking a job, yet under the Children's Act, that's child labor. He said he was seeking for a job to help his mum. I went to that house with immediate effect," said Olayo.

"His mum has a very bad condition that needs further care... after giving birth to her youngest child she fell really sick. She had started her visits at Kenyatta National Hospital but sadly she couldn't continue due to lack of money. She has a clot because of deep vein thrombosis, that has left her partially blind," added Olayo.

According to the Mayo Clinic, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the body's deep veins, usually in the legs.

Malvin's dad runs away

In addition to dealing with partial blindness, the nerves of the ailing mum are failing, and that caused her husband to leave their children all alone in the house and run for the hills.

"With the mum being sick with a young baby and not being able to feed them has made the young man act like the man of the house; he seeks food, diapers from strangers," said the Open Talk Diaries founder.
"They have rent arrears spanning seven months. During the visit, we had to use our phone torches. The caretaker also gave them an immediate eviction notice, making it even harder for her to get well. Her rent is KSh 5,000 a month," she added.

When one thinks it can't get any worse, Olayo added that the house has nothing to eat.

Olayo seeks help for the family

"I am here to seek help on behalf of the family, please any amount will do. The amount will help us to buy food, diapers, meds, milk because the child isn't breastfeeding and and is missing out on nutritious meals," she said.
"If you have any food or even diapers, you can send them as well. Seeing this strong mum has made me want to turn her pain into joy," added Olayo.

One may wonder where the ailing lady's family members are. Olayo said they have an ongoing family feud.

"At the moment, someone has to hold the young man's hand so that he does not get harassed by the adults around him," said the counsellor, who is working with the young man to raise money and also hold therapy sessions with him.

Apart from Muturi and the small baby, there is also Meldy Njoki, Tamara Waigumo and Tamima Gladys. None of the children will go back to school once the new term begins because the mum will not be able to afford it.

Siblings learn in shifts as they care for ailing mother

In another story, Fridausi and Kauthara have been skipping school at intervals since the year began because of their mother.

This was after Saina Nabirye was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and cancer.

The teenagers, 13 and 14, take turns washing, cooking, and cleaning their ailing mother.
