Kitui - At least six students have been confirmed dead following a horrible accident along the Kitui-Kibwezi Road.

What police said about the Kitui accident

Ithitha Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Loctary Lomachary confirmed the Friday, September 13, morning accident, saying it happened at the Wiitu Shopping Centre.

Lomachary said the victims include three pupils from Kyaoni Primary School and three from Kyaoni Secondary. The authorities said five of the victims were girls.

According to the deputy county commissioner, the learners were knocked down by a Probox vehicle while crossing the road at 6.20am.

Lomachary said preliminary findings from the police showed that the Probox was speeding at the time of the accident.

The Probox driver fled the accident scene before later surrendering himself to Mutomo Police Station.

National Police Service spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the incident, saying police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the tragic accident.

“They died on the spot and police are handling the matter,” Onyango said

How a Form Two student was killed in Butere

Elsewhere, a tragic accident left residents of Butere in shock after a Form Two student, William Bwire, was killed while heading to school along the Buyangu-Ekero road.

Bwire, 15, a student at Shitsitswi Secondary School, was riding his bicycle with a friend when they were struck by a sugarcane transport lorry from behind.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened early in the morning as the students made their way to school.

Bwire was killed on the spot, while his friend, who was riding as a passenger, survived but sustained serious injuries.

Butere sub-county police commander Julius Kiptoo confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.
