Elon Musk's Starlink has increased competition in Kenya's internet market, causing jitters among leading players.

Leading telecommunications firm Safaricom wrote to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) calling for regulation of the satellite internet service.

Why Starlink poses competition to Safaricom and others

Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, technology expert Moses Kemibaro explained that Starlink beats Safaricom and other internet providers in terms of speed and package pricing.

"The caveat for Safaricom is the price. It gets more interesting because the speeds are typically anywhere from 100Mbps to 200Mbps, which is much faster than the majority of speeds offered by fiber ISPs, which also cost more than two to three times as much if you want these speeds," said Kemibaro.

A year after it set its base in the country, Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, announced discounted offers for its hardware kits and subscription fees.

Starlink reduced its installation fee from KSh 89,000 to KSh 29,000, availing its kits at Naivas Supermarket.

The firm assured Kenyans of a new package before the end of the year dubbed Starlink Mini, which will cost half the price of its 50GB Standard Plan.

According to DBIP, Kenya's leading internet service providers (ISPs) are Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom, among others.

Starlink internet rental offer

The American billionaire Elon Musk continues to provide stiff competition to Safaricom and other internet service providers in Kenya through his Starlink company.

The company introduced a monthly rental option for the kit, giving a chance to Kenyans who cannot afford to pay for it all at once.

Buyers are required to pay a KSh 2,700 one-time activation charge. The monthly rental charge is KSh 1,950 without a time limit.

What to know about Starlink
