Migori - Locals in Migori county have a reason to smile following the operationalisation of 18 health facilities.

Works on the facilities had stalled for the last five years. However, the county’s Department of Health recently opened the facilities to enhance access to healthcare.

Some of the locals who spoke to TUKO.co.ke further said that the 18 health facilities now operational will help reduce the mortality rate among expectant mothers and children in rural areas.

“I have lost two pregnancies due to the long distance I had to cover before getting to a health facility for medical attention. We are grateful for the facilities that are now close to us,” Mercy Moronge, a local in Kuria West sub-county, said.

Another resident in the Suna West sub-county, Wiga ward, Leonoda Aluoch, noted that the newly opened Kioru dispensary would help HIV patients in the region easily access various services.

“It will help pregnant mothers with antenatal services and HIV patients will not be seeking services elsewhere,” Aluoch said.
"This facility will help reduce defaulter among HIV patients due to distance," she added.

Data from the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022 shows that Migori County had the highest number of infant deaths, at 53 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Ochillo Ayacko's pledge on Migori healthcare

Migori governor Ochillo Ayacko, while opening the Oboke Dispensary in the Kakrao ward, Suna East, said that he would ensure that the facilities have skilled healthcare providers and adequate medicine.

"I am glad to launch this dispensary here so that our young mothers can get attended to in time,” the governor said.

He also affirmed his commitment to ensuring the locals across the county have access to quality healthcare closer to them.

Some of the health facilities that have been operationalized include Nyamware, Mwache, Oboke, Taragwiti, Kioru, Tongeria and Nyalganda.

Mulango Kubwa's first public health facility

Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported that Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja had broken ground for the construction of a KSh 22.6 million health facility at Mlango Kubwa, Mathare.

This comes after the county chief told his critics that his work would vindicate him in the eyes of the voters.

TUKO.co.ke understands that the medical facility is being established in a space that used to be a dump site.
