Migori: KWS Finally Captures Hyenas That Have Been Terrorising Locals

• Locals in the Lichota area of Migori county said they were having sleepless nights because of the roaming hyenas that have been a threat to them
• However, traps set by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) managed to catch two of the many believed to be in the area
• The locals called for more traps to be set to ensure all the hyenas believed to be hiding in the nearby cemetery were caught

Migori- Residents of the Lichota area in Suna East can now breathe a sigh of relief as traps set by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) a fortnight ago finally managed to catch deadly hyenas.

How hyenas have been attacking Migori locals

The hyenas have been causing havoc in the area, laying attacks on residents, feasting on animals, and sometimes unearthing the dead at the nearby cemetery.

Countless attacks have been reported in the Lichota area, leading to complaints from the public, which pushed KWS to move in and address the issue.

Officers from the service visited the area and laid traps, which have now bored fruits as two deadly hyenas were caught on Monday, August 26.

However, the residents urged KWS to set more traps as several other hyenas were still roaming the village.

"We are happy that these hyenas have been caught. At least we can sleep,” Mong'are Domnic, a resident said.

"We are requesting the KWS to set more traps since the hyenas are many and we will help in spotting their hideouts," added Henry Ochieng, another local.

The safety of the residents has been compromised in many occasions following the attacks by the hyenas.

According to the locals, the hyenas walk in groups of five, making the attacks easier for them.

They also believe they use the nearby cemetery as their hideouts during the day as they wait to prey on animals at any given moment.

How to avoid hyena attacks

Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported that Kenyans funnily reacted to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) giving them seven tips to avoid a hyena attack.

While giving the tips, KWS underscored the importance of the scavengers, pointing out that they should be protected.

Among the tips that KWS provided is that Kenyans should not run since a predator's instinct is to chase animals who run away.
