Nairobi - Students of Multimedia University have clashed with police while protesting against water scarcity, poor internet connectivity, and faulty electrical sockets, among other issues.

Trevor Mureithi, a first-year student in the Faculty of Media and Communication, found himself at the centre of the confrontation with aggressive police officers. Enrolled on August 26, Mureithi now faces severe injuries and traumatic memories due to police brutality.

How did cops injure Trevor Mureithi?

In an exclusive interview with TUKO.co.ke, Mureithi recounted that he was in his hostel when police threw a tear gas canister at them. As he and others fled for safety, he fell into a ditch, injuring his leg. Despite his injury, the police beat him mercilessly.

“I thought the hostel would be the safest place for us, but the police threw a tear gas canister at us. As I was running, I fell into a ditch. They followed me to the ditch and started beating me,” Mureithi recalled.

When he informed them that he couldn’t walk, they dragged him, causing severe pain. One officer, determined to “teach him a lesson,” threw another tear gas canister, which exploded near his head.

“I told the police I couldn’t walk, but they insisted on torturing me while urging me to die. They beat me mercilessly. One of them kept saying, ‘this is the one.’ As they insisted on beating me, I just asked them to kill me that is when one cop advised the others to leave me. One of them, however, insisted on giving me ‘dawa.’ Immediately, they threw a tear gas canister, which exploded next to my head,” Mureithi recounted.

How did Trevor Mureithi reach hospital?

A good Samaritan helped Mureithi back to his hostel, where he waited for the tension to subside before being taken to the school dispensary.

He was prescribed a painkiller and later transferred to Sinai Hospital in Rongai, where he is awaiting surgery on his leg.

“I am in pain. Since I was brought here, nothing has been done. The doctors said I have to wait six hours for surgery,” Mureithi said.
“I sustained fractures on my ankles and ear. I just want justice. This is too much for me and my parents. The police dealt with me ruthlessly,” he added.

The school’s student leaders plan to address the matter, while the officer who threw the tear gas canister is believed to be part of the institution’s security team.
