Naivas Supermarket has opened a new express store in Mtwapa, Mombasa, marking its 106th branch.

Where is the new Naivas branch?

The new store, launched on Thursday, September 19, came a few weeks after the retailer opened another outlet in the coastal city, continuing its expansion drive.

The 9,000-square-foot store in Petrocity Mtwapa is designed to provide shoppers with a convenient shopping experience.

Naivas's new branch will operate 24/7.

"Naivas Mtwapa is now open. We are ready to serve all customers in Mtwapa," the retail company posted on its social media pages.

Naivas chief of strategy Andreas Von Paleske said the new development fulfils a long-awaited request from Mtwapa residents.

“We are excited to finally bring the Naivas express experience to the community. This store reflects our commitment to providing convenient shopping options for our customers, wherever they are," he explained.

When was Naivas started and who owns it?

Naivas Supermarket Ltd was started on July 27, 1990, by Peter Mukuha Kago as a family business.

It was initially registered as Rongai Self Service Stores Limited and operated in Rongai, Nakuru county.

Kago's family maintained 100% ownership in the retailer until 2020 when they sold a 31.5% stake at KSh 6 billion to private firms.

In 2022, French Firm Proparco acquired a KSh 3.7b stake in the Kenyan supermarket.

Why Naivas siblings fought

Sibling rivalry rocked giant the retailer after the eldest son of Kago opposed the sale of an extra stake worth KSh 5.92 billion to foreign investors.

Newton Kagira Mukuha opposed the sale of the extra shares to Mauritian conglomerate IBL Group through Mambo Retail.

The Mauritian conglomerate IBL purchased additional shares in Mambo Retail to control a majority stake.
