Nyeri - The Nyeri County Referral Hospital has sought the public's help to identify the body of a young man who was shot during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

The deceased, who was identified as John Thuku, has been at the hospital mortuary for a month following his death from injuries sustained during the protests.

According to Deputy Superintendent Benson Ngari, Thuku was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound on Tuesday, June 25.

He was initially treated in the medical wards before being moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he died after nearly a month of treatment.

"He came here on the 25th of June and was admitted briefly to our medical wards before being transferred to the ICU, where he eventually succumbed," Ngari explained.

How did Nyeri County Referral Hospital know Thuku's identity?

Ngari revealed that Thuku arrived at the hospital in a semi-conscious state and managed to utter what was presumed to be his name.

However, no one has come forward to claim his body or inquire about his condition since the fateful day.

"He was brought in a semi-conscious state and he just told us a name and we presumed that was his name then he lost consciousness. Nobody has ever come to claim his body," Ngari said.

The hospital urged Kenyans to help locate Thuku’s family or any individuals who may know him.

The deputy superintendent stressed that the family might be unaware of his passing and urged anyone with information to come forward.

"We want to appeal to those that may know him especially the relatives to come and collect his body," Ngari added.

Senator narrates watching cop shoot protester dead

Earlier, Nominated ODM senator Beth Syengo criticised police for excessive force on protesters during a Senate debate on July 4.

Syengo recounted pleading with a police officer to spare an innocent young protester outside Parliament, who was subsequently shot despite showing his ID.

She condemned the officer's dismissive attitude, claiming the protester had been wrongly labelled a "crook from Kibera."

Syengo questioned why police, meant to protect citizens, had become aggressors, calling for accountability in their actions against protesters.
