The five police officers arrested in connection with the escape of Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in the Mukuru killings, have been released on a KSh 200,000 bond each.

Why were the officers freed on bond?

The officers who were stationed at Gigiri police station allegedly helped Jumaisi and 12 other Eritrean suspects escape.

Milimani Law Courts senior principal magistrate Martha Nanzushi stated that there was insufficient evidence to justify keeping the officers in detention for an additional 14 days as requested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The five officers considered suspects in Jumaisi's escape are now required to report to the DCI twice a week.

What did DCI say about Jumaisi's escape?

The arrest of the officers came after Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli revealed that the preliminary investigation indicated the incident was an inside job.

He suggested that the officers on duty were deliberately lax to aid the suspects in securing their freedom.

Among the interdicted officers are Gigiri OCS and the sub-county police commander.

A search for the escapees was initiated, with Masengeli urging the public to provide information that could lead to their whereabouts.

DCI offers cash reward for Jumaisi

Earlier, the DCI asked the public to help locate Jumaisi.

The agency also offered a cash reward to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the main suspect in the Mukuru killings.

However, the DCI did not disclose the exact reward amount for information on Jumaisi's whereabouts, describing it only as "significant."

Anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts can report confidentially by calling the police hotlines 911, 999, or 112, or by visiting the nearest police station.

What else you need to know about Jumaisi's case

  • The DCI's announcement of a cash reward for anyone with information on Collin Jumaisi's whereabouts attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans.
  • An eyewitness at the station claimed to have seen Jumaisi leave through the main door while two police officers, whom he identified, were present.
  • Through his lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, Jumaisi alleged that he was tortured into confessing to the killing 42 women.
