The Kenyan internet market has recently faced a disruption with the entrance of Space X's Starlink.
Starlink has been reviewing its pricing for internet packages to woo Kenyan consumers with fast internet connectivity, including an option to rent the installation hardware per month due to the high installation costs.
According to the company's official website, Starlink provides broadband internet access to users worldwide using low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.

During the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests, Kenya experienced poor internet connectivity, which Safaricom stated was caused by the failure of its two underwater cables, which deliver internet traffic in and out of the country.
Many Kenyans on social media have expressed a preference for the new player, arguing that the cable system associated with other internet providers in Kenya allowed the government to disrupt the internet connection and curtail freedom of speech on social media platforms.
The prices vary among the different service providers. Typically, Wi-Fi price in Kenya ranges from about Ksh 1,500 to about Ksh 12,000.

In other related news, Safaricom raised concerns about Starlink's entry into the Kenyan market and urged the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) to regulate satellite internet providers.
Safaricom’s concerns revolve around the potential for satellite coverage to span multiple territorial borders and provide services illegally within Kenya’s borders, leading to what the company called "harmful interference."
The telecom giant, partly owned by the Kenyan government, Vodafone, and Vodacom, expressed that satellite providers should operate as infrastructure providers to ensure local investment, employment, and compliance with Kenyan laws.
