Tororo - A tragic inferno has claimed three lives in Eastern Uganda.

Monitor reports that it was apparently caused by petrol stored in the house in Tororo.

A 25-year-old woman was killed in the fire alongside her two children, aged 3 and 2.

"I suspect the jerrycan exploded due to heat because we had a loud burst which reflected sound from a jerrycan," a neighbour told the Ugandan press.

The deceased woman was cooking inside her rented house when the tragedy befell.

The neighbours' efforts to rescue them proved futile as the door was locked; they later broke into the house but found the trio having been burnt beyond recognition.

"We, as neighbours, tried to rescue the family, but unfortunately, the burglar's door was locked from inside, and this took us time to render quick help," another neighbour said.

Their bodies were ferried to the morgue as the police began their probe.

How 17 Kenyan learners met death inside dormitory

The inferno happened on the same day a similar but large-scale tragedy befell Kenya.

Seventeen learners at Hillside Endarasha Academy Nyeri were killed in a night fire that broke out in one of the dormitories.

National police spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed that 16 learners died at the scene and were burnt beyond recognition, with one perishing while on the way to the hospital.

Fourteen survivors were admitted to hospital, with the Kenya Red Cross confirming that 11 had been admitted to the Nyeri Provincial General Hospital.

Over 800 students were in the school at the time the fire happened.

The cause of the fire was yet to be established at the time of this publication.

How Ruto reacted to Endarasha fire

Speaking about the incident, President William Ruto ordered the relevant agencies to take action to determine what caused the fire.

While comforting the bereaved with his condolence message, the president said all those found culpable would be held to account.

He charged the Ministry of Interior under Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to expedite the probe into the incident.
