President William Ruto has lauded opposition leader Raila Odinga for loosening his stance to embrace calls for unity in the face of the revolt engineered by the Kenyan youth.

What Ruto said over Raila

Speaking in Kakamega on Saturday, August 24, the president observed the need for a united country to achieve its aspirations.

The president suggested a longstanding unity with the opposition chief, foreseeing the successes the country tends to record in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.

"We have all agreed to walk this road. I want to thank my elder brother for accepting to walk with us on this journey of uniting all Kenyans...," said Ruto.

National unity talks

Ruto and Raila held a consultative meeting in July regarding the anti-Finance Bill protests that had taken the country by storm.

The leaders met at KICC to discuss the president's intention to form a multi-sectoral forum to expedite the issues raised by anti-government protesters.

Raila backed Ruto's new resolve, saying it was the best way to get the country out of the political crisis.

The ODM leader said the agenda would include issues such as corruption, unemployment, gender equality, and electoral justice.

At the time, the Kenyan youth vowed to continue demonstrations against Ruto's government, demanding the removal of the housing levy.

They asked the Kenya Kwanza Alliance administration to restore the Linda Mama and EduAfya programmes.

How Raila's party benefitted from partnership with Ruto

The new partnership between Ruto and Raila culminated in the incorporation of some of the honchos from the ODM party into the National Executive.

This was after the president fired his entire Cabinet on July 11, citing below-par performance among the CSs.

Former ODM party national chairman John Mbadi was made the National Treasury Cabinet secretary, and the party's former deputy party leaders, Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, were made the Cabinet secretaries for Mining and Co-operatives, respectively.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, who was ODM's political affairs chief, was nominated into the Energy Ministry.

Raila clarified that the nominations did not imply ODM joining the government or there being a power-sharing deal.
