Nairobi — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni sparked a reaction from the Kenyan internet after attacking Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

The longstanding leader was among the dignitaries attending the official launch of Raila Odinga's African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid at State House Nairobi on Tuesday, August 27.

What Museveni said about Babu Owino

Museveni, in his speech, dragged the youthful Kenyan lawmaker into the Ugandan politics.

He seemed to accuse Babu of collaborating with the opposition to challenge the National Resistance Movement (NRM)'s rule in Kampala.

"There are some individuals in Raila's group who don’t know what they are doing. I am a consumer of intelligence services, so I always see reports. There is a character called Babu dealing with anti-NRM groups. I have never accused Babu but today I am doing it," said Museveni.

The accusation elicited reactions from Kenyans, with a section calling the leader out.

How Kenyans reacted to Museveni's sentiments

Museveni's naysayers wondered why he would pick the high-profile Nairobi event as the venue to settle his scores with Babu.

Nairobi senator and ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna said it was imprudent for Museveni to launch an attack against a young Kenyan leader on the latter's soil.

According to Sifuna, Museveni, if aggrieved by Babu's political undertakings, should have used the rightful channels to register his complaints about the lawmaker.

"Whatever beef Museveni has with Babu Owino, I strongly object to the manner of his attack on a young Kenyan leader on our own soil. Kenya is a country ruled by law, and if there is any objectionable conduct on the part of Babu, there are diplomatic channels to convey that to Kenyan Authorities and let the law take its cause. But to use a presidential podium to make such grave accusations against a Kenyan is a no," reacted Nairobi senator and ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna.

Bobi Wine in Ugandan opposition

Babu is a known ally of Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Union Party (NUP).

A few years back, Museveni's government wrote to the Kenyan authorities communicating Babu being banned from visiting Uganda.

The lawmaker was accused of partnering with Bobi in undermining the Ugandan government.

Bobi, a leftist politician, rose to be one of Museveni's resilient challengers in the build-up to the 2021 Ugandan elections.

Despite a remarkable campaign in the vote, Bobi, in his first attempt at the presidency, was routed by Museveni, who won the vote despite accusations of electoral malpractices and rigging.

He has held onto his stance against Museveni, whom he accuses of advancing dictatorship and authoritarianism in Uganda.

Bobi and his family suffered at the hands of the state authorities, which often arrested and detained them.
