President Yoweri Museveni's eldest child, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has declared he will not be on the presidential ballot in the 2026 Ugandan general election.

What Muhoozi said over Uganda's elections

He instead restated his support for his father, President Yoweri Museveni.

Meanwhile, he will be focusing on his role as the chief of the Ugandan People's Defence Forces (UPDF).

"I would like to announce that I will not be on the ballot paper in 2026. Almighty God told me to focus on His Army first. So, I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections," he expressed himself via a tweet.

Muhoozi was however categorical that the presidential post would not be handed to a civilian after the elections.

Should he vie, Museveni will be going for his seventh term, having taken office in 1986.

Earlier this year, the veteran leader appointed Muhoozi to the helm of the UPDF, a move many interpreted as preparation for succession.

But Museveni and Muhoozi both denied the existence of a plot to catapult the latter to the presidency.

As a high-ranking military official, Muhoozi is prohibited from discussing political issues, but he has regularly delved into debates, provoking diplomatic squabbles.

Bobi Wine in Ugandan opposition

Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, is the leader of the National Union Party (NUP).

A leftist politician, Bobi rose to be one of Museveni's resilient challengers in the build-up to the 2021 Ugandan elections.

Despite a remarkable campaign in the vote, Bobi, in his first attempt at the presidency, was routed by Museveni, who won the vote despite accusations of electoral malpractices and rigging.

He has held onto his stance against Museveni, whom he accuses of advancing dictatorship and authoritarianism in Uganda.

Bobi and his family suffered at the hands of the state authorities, which often arrested and detained them.
