The Kisumu City manager has swiftly enacted strict measures for individuals caught littering the city's surroundings.

Abala Wanga emphasised the city's commitment to cleanliness, aiming to make the municipality an appealing and tidy tourist destination.

"We want to make Kisumu city and its environs the most habitable and clean place to attract more tourists to our city," Wanga said.

What are the charges for littering Kisumu city?

According to K24, the city authorities issued a new directive to address cleanliness concerns.

Cane transporters caught spilling sugarcane on tarmac roads while en route to sugar factories will now face a KSh10,000 fine, allocated to clean up the spilled debris.

Moreover, a KSh 1,000 fine will be imposed on those found grazing animals or allowing animals to loiter within the Central Business District (CBD), as part of the city's initiative to uphold cleanliness standards.

Additionally, effective this month, all hawkers are banned from vending goods or assorted foodstuffs in the streets within Kisumu City Municipality.

Why Johnson Sakaja ordered city hawkers to clear streets

Meanwhile, in November 2022, Nairobi county governor Johnson Sakaja ordered all hawkers to vacate the city streets in his bid to restore sanity.

"There will be no hawking on the streets. In fact, I'm enforcing it from tomorrow morning, even around the bus station, I won't allow it," Sakaja said.

Sakaja defended his order, arguing that it was for the safety of the hawkers, who risk their lives selling on the pavements.
