Nairobi - A moment of drama unfolded in the Senate after Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale dared his Nairobi counterpart Edwin Sifuna, to a fight after the temperatures rose in the Upper House.

It all started when the Nairobi Senator seemingly addressed his rival colleagues insolently, prompting the Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to call him out for what he termed as unruly behaviour.

In the proceedings that took place on the floor of the Senate, Kingi, who had a tough time controlling the not-so-honourable lawmakers, insisted that Sifuna must address his colleague as honourable members despite his agitation with some of them.

It was while Kingi gave Sifuna a dress down that Khalwale asked for a chance to speak, and while wading into the debate, he read the House's standing orders, insisting that the Azimio senator should face the consequences for his unruly behaviour in the Senate.

"Mr Speaker, I cannot be voted for by 300,000 people in Kakamega and then come here and be made a figure for a picture that the honourable senator for Nairobi is painting. You need to call him on order unless Mr Speaker you want to allow this House to degenerate into a fistfight," he said.

Khalwale challenges Sifuna for fight

Citing his experience as a bull-fighter, Khalwale said he was ready to "fix" the Nairobi senator so that the matter could be solved.

However, Kingi could not condone the drums of war already being beaten in the House, and he thus asked Khalwale to take his seat.

"Senator Boni, that is unparliamentary and you have to withdraw it," a tough-talking Kingi maintained.

As the proceedings degenerated into a shouting match as other lawmakers could be heard trying to get Khalwale to withdraw his statements, Kingi insisted the Kakamega senator needed to apologise.

Though Khalwale proceeded to retract his remarks, he stated he would not waste a chance to "fix" Sifuna outside of the House.

Sifuna doubts Khalwale's mastery of English

This is not the first time that Khalwale and Sifuna have taken on each other.

On Thursday, July 27, the lawmakers had a discussion on TV on the conduct of the government in dealing with protesters during the anti-government protests.

While addressing Khalwale, Sifuna doubted his counterpart's English proficiency, telling him that he would have a hard time teaching him how to speak the King's language.

"Khalwale, you will struggle to teach me English. You have said you did better than me in Musingu, but you have refused to produce the results so that I see yes, you got an A or maybe you got AAA. I don't know whatever it is you did in your old days," he said.
