Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has appointed 13 new vice-chancellors (VCs) to take over 13 public universities across the country.

The appointments come after the appointees successfully underwent interviews by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The 13 are set to undergo training on procurement, people management and financial management before taking up their roles, which are equated to CEOs, as reported by The Standard.

In the appointments, Machogu appointed the 13 news dons to replace those whose two five-year terms had ended and to replace or confirm the appointment of those holding the offices in an acting capacity.

Professor Barasa Lwagula is now the VC of Alupe University which is located in Teso South, Busia county.

The university, whose slogan is "The Bastion of Knowledge", was established through the Alupe University College Order in 2015 on July 24.

Vice-chancellors appointments in Kenya

In the new appointments, Professor Benedict Mutua will take over as Technical University of Kenya VC, replacing Professor Paul Shiundu, who was at the helm of the Nairobi-based higher learning institution from May 2023.

At the University of Eldoret in Uasin Gishu, Professor Thomas Kimeli Cheruiyot will be the VC as Professor Eric Kipyegon Koech takes over at Kabianga University in Kericho county.

The Education CS appointed Professor Nathan Ogechi as the new VC of Kisii University.

Ogechi will replace John Akama, who retired after completing his two five-year terms as Kisii University VC.

Other changes include the appointment of Professor Peter Nganga Muchiri as Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DKUAT) VC, Professor Joyce Jepkirui Agali will be in charge of Machakos University as Professor Peter K Muriuungi will be the new Tharaka University VC.

Machogu also confirmed the appointments of Professor James Kahindi as Pwani University VC, Professor Linus Muthuri Gitonga for Karatina University and Professor Douglas Shitanda for South Eastern Kenya University

Professor Emily Achieng Akumo is the new VC for Jaramogi University of Science and Technology (JKUAT), with Professor Charles Omondi taking over as Tom Mboya University VC.

These appointments come after Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) said that many universities were unable to operate optimally because they lacked substantive VCS.
