A Kenyan man has advised young people against building luxurious houses in their village homes, terming it as a dead asset.

The man wondered why anyone should use millions of shillings to build a house in their rural hometowns, and they will only end up sleeping in it a few times in their lifetime.

In a video shared on social media, the man used comedian Mulamwah as his point of reference, saying he built a house worth millions in the village, but it remains a dead investment.

He said such a village home cannot be used meaningfully to help the owner in times of need.

"I saw, for instance, Mulamwah built a house worth more than KSh 40 million. I would advise young people not to follow his example because such a house in a rural area cannot help you in any way. If you get into financial trouble and want to sell it, it can take years to find a buyer," he said.

The man suggested instead of building a house in the village, young people should build houses in leading towns such as Nairobi as they get more financial returns from building in cities as opposed to rural areas.

"Invest in Nairobi or within Nairobi. Go to a place like Kitengela or Syokimau, or Ruaka. Building a house in such areas is a worthy investment that will generate more money for you," he said.

How did Kenyans react to his advice?

However, social media users seemingly disagreed with him, with many pointing out that building in the village was about preparing for retirement and not about investing.

Here are some of the comments that his video generated:

"I think Mulamwah wants to retire early. Go back home and enjoy the ushago peace and nature."

"My wish was to build my rural home no matter what."

Byron said:

"We all have different priorities. Mulamwah has his own priorities and you also do."
