We live in an era where getting a dedicated domestic worker is no longer easy as many are always looking for greener pastures.

The same can be said of some cruel bosses who tend to mistreat their employees, leading to a high turnover in their homes.

That is, however, not the case for Zanini Othman, a Tanzanian domestic worker who has worked in the same household for two decades.

Boss wanted to release her due to pregnancy

In an interview with Mwananchi, Zanini disclosed that her journey started in 2003 shortly after her father died.

Grieving, and looking to make ends meet, she became a domestic worker and got pregnant in 2006.

"When the time came to give birth, my boss told me not to come back as she would look for another worker," she started.

According to Zanini, her boss was apprehensive of bringing her back, given that her predecessor had gone through a similar incident and left the boss in limbo.

Heartbroken about losing job

The decision broke her heart given that she was looking to raise her baby with proceeds from the same job she was being let go from.

As much as she accepted her fate, Zanini adds that she was lost on what to do next given that her due date was fast approaching.

Before leaving, she did one last thing that, unbeknownst to her, would change the course of things forever.

Her decision to tell her employer's children that she was going away and would not return guaranteed her return as the kids refused to agree with their mother's decision.

Employer's kids saved her job

Since the boss's children loved her for the way she had lived with them affectionately, they told her they would talk to their mother not to dismiss her.

It was a moment she would never forget as they managed to convince their mother to only let her go away during maternity and operate with a substitute to cover for her.

"They told me to find someone I know so that when the time comes to return to work, it will be easier to replace me once I'm ready to return," she said.

Zanini says she did as told and after completing her 40 days of maternity leave, she returned to work to continue her duties, a job she still does today.

She is convinced her job remained secure even in her absentia because she treated her employer's children well.

"When the children are satisfied, it's very rare for an employee to be dismissed, unless you have other issues with the boss," she concluded.

Her story is a heartwarming reminder of the enduring power of loyalty, dedication, and genuine relationships between bosses and their employees.
