Murang'a - A man who has been terrorising residents of Mbiri has finally been arrested following a police operation.

Samuel Mwangi Maina, also known as the axe man, was apprehended on Thursday, August 17, in Kenol Town, Maragua.

Maina's victims alleged he would break window panes and cut off the grills with the axe to gain access into their homes.

Murang'a police commander David Kainga said once inside the house, the man would sprinkle petrol all over the place and threaten to burn down the home if they failed to cooperate.

"This notorious criminal has been involved in committing serious crimes, like robberies and he has been applying strategies like carrying petrol and an axe.Whenever he approaches a homestead, he smashes the widows panes and eventually splashes the petrol into those houses.
After doing that, he issues some threats to those people therein that if they raise any alarm, he is going to put the houses ablaze. That's how he's been operating and is been gaining access to those houses by breaking in through the windows and stealing from the members of the public," Kainga said.

Why it took long to arrest him

The police boss explained that the operation to arrest him had been ongoing for the last three weeks since people made them aware of his activities.

Kainga added that Maina had committed numerous crimes, stating eight had stepped up to record a statement.

The officer said Maina would be arraigned in court, assuring the public of their safety after the breakthrough.

"For the last 12 hours, the National Police Service officers have been in hot pursuit of a serious criminal who is very notorious, and we managed to arrest him yesterday in the afternoon. We have around eight incidences that have already been reported.
I wish to inform the members of the public that we have managed to arrest him, and he's already with us, and we are processing him so that can be taken to court," he added.

Robbery with violence suspect arrested while relocating

In a separate incident, Ezekiel Kiarie, a wanted criminal, was nabbed along Limuru Road as he escaped with his family from the city to his rural home in Dundori, Nyandarua County.

Kiarie had opted to relocate after realising that detectives were closing in on him.

In the arrest, sleuths intercepted a Mitsubishi canter, registration number KAM 231J, that was ferrying the suspect, his family members and their belongings to Nyandarua.

After searching the vehicle, the officers recovered a Ceska pistol with a magazine loaded with two rounds of ammunition and a CZ P-07 pistol loaded with 12 rounds of 9mm calibre.
