  • Daudi Hani lost his parents when he was just 10 years old, a development that saw him raised at the Thika Rescue Centre as a vulnerable youngster
  • Nevertheless, he did not let the setback hold him back as he recently achieved a milestone by obtaining his bachelor's degree in commerce from Mount Kenya University (MKU)
  • Even more heartening is the fact that Hani has been offered employment by the Department of Children Services as a well-deserved recognition of his diligent efforts

A wave of pride and jubilation covered Thika Rescue Centre after one of the destitute children from the institution achieved a milestone he will forever cherish.

The cheers and ululations were because Daudi Hani had graduated from the Mount Kenya University (MKU) with a bachelor’s degree in commerce, accounting option.

And there was every reason to celebrate given that Hani, who hails from Garissa County, was at one point hopeless in life.

Hani's journey has been unbelievable

According to the Kenya News Agency, the new graduate was rescued after his single mother died when he was only 10 years ago.

He was taken in by the Garissa Rescue Centre before transferring to Thika where he joined Junior Academy School in Class 5 and went ahead to score 400 marks in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

“The journey has been unbelievable. Having no parents and not much psychosocial support, it wasn’t easy at all. However, a number of well-wishers and some organisations came through and supported my cause,” an overjoyed Hani said.

He added that rescue centres have countless bright minds who, if given adequate resources as well as the right financial and psychosocial support, can realise their dreams.

Hani offered job in government

Even as he revels in beating all the odds to scale the educational ladder, there are more reasons for him to smile.

As fate would have it, the celebration was attended by Shem Nyakutu, the Secretary, Department of Children Services.

After hearing Hani's story, Nyakutu announced that the Ministry will offer him a job this month as a reward for the hard work he put in despite the challenges.

The government official termed the achievement a milestone and a motivation to other children from disadvantaged background that they too can achieve their dreams.

Man reunites with family after 27 years

In another story with a happy ending, 32-year-old Moses Muturi was separated from his family at a very young age after having a misunderstanding with his uncle who beat him to pulp.

The uncle was arrested and he was taken to the hospital and later moved to Thika Children Rescue Centre where he grew up.

After 27 years of being away from home, he was recently reunited with the family when his story was shared on media.
