Why Alfred Keter wants more from William Ruto on floods

In a statement on Wednesday, April 24, Keter asked the head of state to declare floods a national disaster.

The outspoken politicians called on the president to directly support all those affected by floods.

Keter questioned if Ruto knew that close to 30% of Nairobi residents had been homeless by the floods.

"As you speak about National highways and your plans of dualling Nairobi- Nakuru Highway, are you aware that 30% of Nairobians have been rendered homeless by floods which have caused widespread devastation in most residential neighbourhoods?
At least once, show empathy and compassion for the victims by declaring floods a national disaster and supporting those affected souls," Keter said.

4 bodies retrieved in Mathare River

In a related news, four bodies believed to be of flood victims were retrieved from Mathare River, following heavy downpour witnessed in Nairobi county.

A report by Citizen Digital indicated that the four bodies, two men and two women were retrieved on Wednesday, April 24.

The bodies of the four were taken to the City Mortuary awaiting postmortem to help in their identification.

Starehe Sub-county Police Commander Fred Abuga stated that six other people remain unaccounted for as a search operation continues in Mathare.

  • By Tuesday, April 23, Citizen TV, quoting the Kenya Red Cross Society, reported that the floods had led to the deaths of 35 people.
  • The floods have not spared Safaricom Sacco housing projects along Mombasa Road after the Athi River broke its banks.
  • The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) announced a partial closure of roads in Nairobi county.
