The family of the late Cheruiyot Kirui, the mountaineer who was found dead on Mt Everest, has revealed that he fell together with his guide, Nawang Sherpa.

Cheruiyots body found 48 metres from the summit

In a press statement, the family revealed that during his summit push, Cheruiyot lost radio communication with Basecamp early in the morning of May 22, 2024.

"He was reported missing by his expedition company and immediately a team of rescue sherpas stationed at camp 4 were dispatched to the point of last contact," read the family statement.

"Cheruiyot's body was discovered at an altitude of 8,800m, 48 meters from the summit. Whereas it is not possible to determine the exact sequence of events, we know that Cheruiyot and his sherpa guide, Nawang Sherpa, took a fall," read another part.

Search for Nawang continues

Although the family was also grieving, they extended their condolences to his friends, colleagues and the wider outdoor community.

"Search for Nawang Sherpa continues and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family in Nepal and pray that he is found. More information will be shared in due course," said Cheruiyot's family.

Mountaineer invested KSh 7 Million in expedition

Another story revealed that Cheruiyot knew about the dangers he would face while scaling Mount Everest and did everything he could to prepare for them.

According to his friend, who scaled Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro with him, he sunk KSh 7 million into the highly anticipated expedition.

In September 2023, Kirui climbed Mt Manaslu without supplemental oxygen, which gave him a feel of what to expect at Everest.
