Nairobi - Tana River senator Danson Mungatana has criticised Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for publicly supporting the one-man, one-vote, one-shilling revenue allocation formula.

During a discussion on TV47 on Wednesday, May 15, the lawmaker expressed his disappointment with the DP's remarks.

Mungatana questioned if the statement means areas like Lamu, Tana River, Garissa, Isiolo, Turkana, Taita Taveta, and Marsabit are not important to the nation.

He added that the DP might be forgiven as he was speaking to an audience that was hopeful for such a message.

"If he intends to be President of this Republic of Kenya, he is heading in the wrong direction and he needs to be told in no uncertain terms that all of us listening to him on that day are very disappointed. He needs to be forgiven because he was in an area where he needed to get the claps," Mungatana said.

Mungatan emphasised that Gachagua's sentiments did not reflect the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party's position.

"We have never sat down as UDA to pass the policy which was being pronounced by the DP. We've never sat as a PG to approve that, and if someone is talking, he's talking his personal issues," the lawyer stated.

Why is Mungatana against the revenue-sharing formula

The legislator retreated that the formula was against the Kenyan Constitution, adding that it was discriminative, to say the least.

He warned the DP that he might self-destruct if he continued with a similar approach to the issue.

"It's not even constitutional. In the constitution, we are all equal; there is no discrimination; you can say what you want. Politically, it's a dynamite that he's walking on. From where I stand, those are his personal opinions, and we totally disagree and he must be told to his face that if he's looking forward to being a president with that kind of approach, then he's going nowhere." he added.

Gachagua advocates for one man, one shilling

As reported earlier, Gachagua supported a section of leaders demanding more resource allocation to the Mt. Kenya region due to its large population.

The DP argued that having a larger population means they pay more taxes and, hence, need to receive more resources.

He stated that he would not offer an apology for demanding an equal share of resources based on one man, one vote, one shilling.
