Uasin Gishu - In a ruling by the Eldoret High Court, a 37-year-old woman, Winnie Wangari Maina, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of her husband on August 31, 2022.

The incident occurred after the couple returned from a late-night drinking session, where Maina stabbed Wycliffe Muriithi Miriti five times in the chest.

According to Justice Reuben Nyakundi, Maina deliberately targeted a lethal area, indicating her intent to end her husband's life, as reported by Ramogi TV.

"Murder is an ultimate act to end life and all that is special in a person. You turned your husband into a corpse in a brutal manner. You could have disabled him using other means if there was a fight, but by stabbing him five times meaning your intention was only one...that thou shall not live," said the judge.

Court dismisses Wangari's plea for non-custodial sentence

Despite Maina's plea for leniency, citing her nine-year-old daughter and her status as a first-time offender, Justice Nyakundi noted her lack of remorse and failure to seek forgiveness from the deceased's family.

Consequently, the court dismissed her request for a non-custodial sentence.

"I thus deny you a non-custodial sentence as sought by your lawyer and order that you serve 25 years in jail," Justice Nyakundi went on.

In his closing remarks, the judge emphasised the importance of peaceful conflict resolution within couples, urging against the use of weapons like knives or guns in resolving family disputes.

"As I always say, when husbands and wives cannot find ground to dialogue and sort out differences, then the power of a gun or a knife should not be an option at all," he advised.

What happened before Wycliffe Miriti's death?

According to the neighbours, the couple was into many quarrels which resulted in the stabbing.

Upon realising the victim's critical condition, Maina rushed him to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret, where he succumbed.

The security worker identified as Geoffrey Rono, who is attached to the G4 security company, reported the incident to the Langas Police Station.
