Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor (VC) Paul Wainaina started an annual leave on Monday, April 15, to an unspecified date.
In a memo directed to all students, the VC stated that the move was deliberated after a consultative meeting with the university council.
''Following consultation with the university council, I wish to notify the university community that I will be proceeding on annual leave with effect from Monday, April 15,'' read the VC's memo.

According to the statement, the university council appointed Waceke Wanjohi, who is the current deputy vice chancellor for academics, as the acting VC.
Wainaina called upon the Kenyatta University family, to give Wanjohi support to ensure the institution's activities run smoothly.
''The purpose of this memo is to request all students to accord the acting VC utmost support as she takes up her duties in the office of the VC and steers this university to greater heights,'' Wainaina concluded.
In July 2022, the VC clashed with former president Uhuru Kenyatta, over a disputed piece of land that the then head of state had allocated to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to build a logistic and operational hub.
Wainaina opposed the government's project, which was to be constructed adjacent to Kenyatta University Teaching and Research Hospital (KUTRH). According to him, the project had little impact on the students.
This led to his sacking by Uhuru in July, and was later reinstated in November 2022 by President William Ruto.
On March 18, the university lost 11 students in an accident in Maungu, Voi.
The students were heading to university musical festivals in Mombasa when the tragedy happened.
On Friday last week, Wainaina led the university council in handing a cheque of KSh 181,818, to the 11 families that lost their loved ones in the accident.
