An officer attached to the Karatu Police Station in Gatundu South is in the custody of his colleagues as they trace a firearm that got lost while in his hands.

Identified as Constable Benson Otenda, the cop reported out of the station on the morning of Tuesday, May 21, after completing his shift the previous night.

While signing out, Otenda carried his firearm with him on his way home instead of returning it to the armoury, TV47 reports.

At home, he retired to bed with the firearm placed beside his bed.

On waking up hours later, Otenda was shocked to learn the AK47 was missing.

He immediately set out to the station, where he made a report about the gun missing.

Otenda was detained as his colleagues mounted a search for the firearm.

This is not the first instance in which a police officer is robbed of state-owned articles in their custody.

In December last year, an officer stationed at the Nyamasaria police post lost a government vehicle to a quartet of daring men who had trailed him to a fuel-filling station.

The incident occurred on the dawn of Saturday, December 23, at the Hub Petrol Station along Kisumu-Nairobi road.

According to the investigators, one of the attackers, armed with an AK 47 rifle, approached the officer before the other three men showed up.

They subdued and unceremoniously ejected him from the vehicle and injured him in his right leg.

The attackers later took control of the vehicle registration details GKB 110A/ KBQ431Q and left with it.

Besides the vehicle, the officer was robbed of a laptop bag bearing a police radio set, a police notebook, a personal mountain bike, a brown wallet containing an ATM card, an identification card, an NHIF card and a police certificate of appointment.

The officer encountered his tribulations while on his way to a patrol base where he was to join his colleagues.
