Kitui: Grief As South Eastern Kenya University Student Dies While Swimming With Friends

Kitui - Grief and despair descended upon South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) following the tragic loss of a first-year student.

The first-year student lost his life following a drowning accident in the Mwita Syano River located at SEKU premises.

Tiberious Mamwacha, aged 20, was in the company of two others when they went swimming students on Friday swimming.

In a video seen by TUKO.co.ke, the three students were captured having fun as they swam in the flooded river.

The student who was filming others swimming could be heard encouraging others to continue swimming toward the river bank.

However, what started as innocent fun turned into a nightmare after Mwamwacha drowned as his colleagues watched helplessly.

After hours of search, local divers managed to retrieve Mwamwacha's body as the residents watched in disbelief.

Nairobi student drowns in school's swimming pool

Elsewhere, a family in Eastleigh was in distress and great pain after their 11-year-old son drowned in a school's swimming pool days after admission.

Iilyaas Abdikarim Ali Mohamud, a Grade Two pupil at Visa Oshwal Primary School, went missing on the evening of Tuesday, February 20, when his father went to pick him up from school.

Mohamud's family said efforts to find the Grade Two pupil were futile until his body was later found inside the school's swimming pool on Wednesday morning, February 21.

A magistrate court on Thursday, February 23, ordered the detention of Geoffrey Opala, The school's swimming pool caretaker, for seven days after the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that the attendant saw the child drowning but never informed the school management.

The investigating body said Opala neglected his official duty contrary to Section 128 as read with Section 36 of the penal code.
