Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has said there is no compensation for farmers who are counting losses following destructive floods experienced in the country.

Speaking when he appeared before the Senate Agriculture Committee on Wednesday, May 22, Linturi told the committee the government had not allocated any money to compensate farmers.

"I want to clarify that the government emergency response to the emergencies caused by floods does not include compensation to crop and livestock farmers that were affected by floods. The government has no budgetary allocation for compensation to those farmers affected by floods, " Linturi stated.

Why the ministry cannot talk of compensation

Linturi added that the ministry has no conclusive details on the impacts of floods, as some areas are still experiencing floods, thus making it difficult to immediately formulate an action plan.

"It is not possible for us as a ministry to state the level of damage caused by the floods. The rains are still going on in some parts of the country, making it impossible to inform on the actual level of losses," Linturi explained.

According to the ministry, 33,00 hectares of crops were destroyed by floods across the country.

With over 300 lives lost and 20,000 families displaced, Linturi said the ministry will look into how farmers could be relieved from the losses.

"We shall check on what insurance can do so that we can see what to make out of. We will have a sit down later with insurers and discuss after we have established the losses incurred," he said.
