A Mombasa Court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 30 years in prison for pouring acid on his ex-girlfriend's face, rendering her permanently blind.

Senior Resident Magistrate Gladys Olimo delivered the verdict, emphasising the irreversible harm caused to 23-year-old Fatuma Kaingu.

Despite the convict, Mohamed Mwarandu Kombe, denying the accusations and claiming self-defence by stating he only splashed liquid soap on her when she attacked him with a stone, the court found his defence inconsistent and pronounced him guilty, according to Nation.

"It is in this context that the court agrees with the state that a punitive sentence is required in this case. As a result, Kombe has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. The right to appeal is within 14 days," said Olimo.

How were Fatuma Kaingu's eyes affected?

The verdict was reached based on medical reports showing the victim's conjunctiva was infected, red, swollen, and with a laceration on the upper lid, resulting in permanent damage to her eyesight.

Furthermore, Kombe destroyed Kaingu's phone during their altercation, which was valued at KSh 6,000.

Despite Kombe's plea for leniency, citing his young family, the court remained steadfast, emphasising the gravity of his crime and the need for a custodial sentence.

The duo had a short relationship before Kaingu expressed her disinterest in being with Kombe, leading to the altercation.

The incident happened on November 15, 2021 in the Tudor area in Mombasa.

Embu man yells at judge after sentencing

In a separate incident, a man became infuriated and insulted the judge when an Embu court sentenced him to 25 years in jail after being found guilty of a criminal offence.

The court made the verdict considering his past criminal records.

The man was allowed to appeal the sentencing if he was not satisfied with the judgment.
