For over a month, ravaging floods caused property destruction and displacement in Kamukunji’s informal settlements.

Majengo, Kiambiu, Kitui Village, Blue Estate in Pumwani, and Shauri Moyo were the most affected areas.

With their homes swept away and social amenities unavailable, many slum dwellers left everything to fate.

The floods rendered an estimated 10,000 individuals homeless, with an additional 2,000 displaced by the government-initiated demolitions of homes situated along the riverbanks.

Resident lost homes and vital documents

Rose Ayuma Naftali, a resident of Kamukunji, told TUKO.co.ke that young children were forced to sleep in the cold after their homes were filled with water.

"To add salt to injury, bulldozers then came and broke our houses into pieces," she lamented.

Agnes Wanjiru corroborated Ayuma's words, recalling how she was forced to sleep outside after water got into her house.

They lost everything, from birth certificates, school certificates, clothes and other belongings, leaving them to rely on help.

Offered food by kindhearted mall owners

There was something to smile about when area MP Yusuf Hassan was approached by a group of businessmen from BBS Mall to assist the affected.

The philanthropists offered foodstuffs such as rice, cooking oil and flour, offering hope to the once-devastated dwellers.

“We hope to do more in the near future to help the families get back on track after a huge loss," Dalmar Abdi, a representative promised.

He explained that the recipients were identified through a verification exercise conducted by the Kamukunji Sub-County Disaster Committee, overseen by the DCC.

Such were predominantly female-headed households, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and other vulnerable members of the community.

The area MP was optimistic that the food donated would go a long way in ensuring that the children don't go to school hungry and have a decent meal when they return home.

Kenyan student donates food to flood victims in Homa Bay

Elsewhere, Nathaniel Odongo, a student at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, rescued displaced residents of Kital village in Homa Bay county.

Odongo explained that he hails from a very humble background and realised his dreams through the help of strangers.

He has established a charity organisation in Kisumu as a way of giving back and reaching many people.
