A Rongai man has recounted the hair-raising moment when he came face to face with a lioness that scaled a perimeter wall and gained access to his compound a few days ago.

Days after viral Closed-Circuit Television footage showed how the wild animal gained access to the compound, Joshua Isigi recalled being frightened after spotting it.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Isigi, a worker in the compound, said on the fateful night, he heard dogs barking incessantly, and he was compelled to find out whether everything was okay.

While at his door, he spotted the majestic lioness, and in its jaws was the Rongai home's dog whose life it was squeezing out.

"It was around 10pm and when I saw it, it was already killing the dog," he said.

Isigi said he quickly thought of a way to scare away the lioness.

"I hit iron sheets with a rod to scare it away, and that trick worked. I saw it running away by running over the gate with the dog," he said.

The farmworker narrated that the slain dog's name was Jersey, a cautious and faithful dog.

Viral CCTV footage in Rongai

As earlier reported, a video surfaced showing a lioness wandering through a neighbourhood at night in Rongai.

The surveillance video shows the lioness near a residence's entrance on Pasha Drive.

The lioness is seen leaping onto the gate's wall and pausing momentarily to peer into the residence before making its way inside.

KWS hunts for lioness

In response to the whereabouts of the stray lioness, the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) said it had dispatched experts to hunt the animal.

KWS said it had immediately dispatched its Human-Wildlife Conflict (HCW) team to Rongai, although the stray lioness was not located.

KWS further assured residents that the HWC is still patrolling the area, and the Problem Animal Management Unit (PAMU) will provide further reinforcement.
