The company, however, revealed that it had set up measures to minimise interruptions and keep its customers connected.
"About the damaged cables, that is still under repairs, but we have since activated measures to minimize interruption and keep you connected as we await the full restoration of the cable," said Safaricom.
The internet service provider reiterated that the measures provided could cause reduced internet speed.
"Customers may, however, experience reduced internet speeds. We apologise for any inconvenience caused," the telco added.
In a public notice on Sunday, May 12, Safaricom said it had activated redundancy measures that will minimise service interruptions.
This caused a stir among Kenyans, with some demanding compensation for the money they spent buying data bundles.
@yrnsinh said:
"I can't believe I wasted KSh 500 on data today thinking my phone was the problem."
@Sium_254 asked:
"I have spend more than KSh 2000 to buy internet bundles for my meetings and streaming, will you somehow compensate this please?
Shylar Inziani said:
"I have bought bundles again and again hope you will give me back my bundles."
Internet service providers revealed that slow internet connectivity in East Africa and South Africa is a global issue.
The providers, including Safaricom and Airtel, explained that the slow internet is caused by a major sub-sea fibre cut.
They assured customers that they had implemented measures to ensure minimum service interruption.
