Siaya: 19-Year-Old Man Dies In Gold Mine In Rarieda Sub-County

• A man's life was cut short after a sandstone buried him alive on Monday, May 6, at Lumba village in Siaya county
• Kennedy Ouma had worked two years at the site before meeting his untimely death on Monday evening
• Efforts by his colleagues to rescue him were in vain, as the sandstone was further caved in by walls of the 50 feet gold mine

Siaya: A cloud of sorrow engulfed residents of Lumba village yet again, after a gold mine caved in and collapsed on a miner on the evening of Monday, May 6.

Kennedy Ouma was buried alive inside a gold mine in the village of Rarieda sub-county after sandstone collapsed on him.

How did Siaya miner meet his death?

According to his colleague, Evans Onyango, who was also working at the site, the shaft fell on the 19-year-old man while still inside the mine a few minutes before clocking out.

Ouma and his two colleagues had worked at the site for two years before the tragic incident on Monday evening ended his life.

"We have been working here for the past two years. We normally work until 9.00 pm every day, but on Monday were agreed to leave at 10.00 pm. While he was still inside the mine when a sandstone fell on him, and we were unable to rescue him," Onyango said.

Vincent Otienoa miner at the site further said that the shaft caved in when they were finalising on pulling out the sand.

"We were on the lap of ending the day when I saw a stone roll down the mine to where Ouma was. We tried to pull the stone away but we could not manage," Otieno emotionally said.

The search for his body in the 50-foot mine was aided by the rescue team from the Siaya county government.

Gold mine collapses in Migori

The incident occurred barely a month after two miners were also killed after a shift collapsed on them in Obwanda village.

The two miners met their untimely while working after the mine's shaft debris collapsed and killed them on the spot.
