Residents of Obwanda village have been thrown into mourning following the sudden demise of two gold miners.

According to local law enforcement officials, the tragic incident took place on Thursday, April 18 after a gold mine shaft collapsed and buried them.

The miners were reportedly engaged in gold panning when the shaft collapsed, leading to the tragic incident.

The lake region county has garnered significant attention due to the recurring incidents of gold miners being fatally trapped underground when shaft walls collapse.

Siaya county a hotspot of gold mine deaths

On Thursday, March 21 two people lost their lives as four others were injured inside a gold mine when a rock debris fell on them.

Kephas Ojuka, chairperson of the Migori County Artisanal Miners' Association, confirmed the occurrence, adding that two miners died on impact.

Ojuka revealed that among the four rushed to Migori Referral Hospital, one had severe injuries compared to the others.

Ojuka further explained that the miners were panning for gold when rock debris fell from the mine's wall, killing two and injuring four.

On June 19, 2023, a gold miner died after the walls of a mining shaft collapsed at a gold mine in Rarieda Uyore village, Alego Usonga.

On the day of the incident, the young man was in the company of six other colleagues when tragedy struck.

On December 3, 2021, at least eight people were trapped on Thursday following the collapse of a gold mine in Abimbo area within Siaya county, authorities said.

The site manager, David Orido, observed that the miners were on their routine work when the walls of the shaft crumbled, trapping them inside.

Orido revealed the miners were 10 at the time of the incident, but two found their way out of the shaft, leaving behind the eight who were still trapped.
