He is a Canadian-American actor who came to the limelight after being featured in Suits as Mike Ross. When he was 19, his parents divorced, and he moved to Los Angeles. Mike graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California.
In 2004, he won the Jack Nicholson Award, a scholarship given by the famous actor to excellent school performers. After winning the award, he started working on a play called The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia? by Edward Albee at the Mark Taper Forum.
In 2011, he started playing the character Mike Ross in the TV show Suits on the USA Network after he was let go from the pilot episode of NBC's Friends With Benefits. He received much praise for his role in Suits, which lasted until the show's seventh season in 2017-18.
He also became a co-producer of Suits alongside co-star Gabriel Macht and even directed some episodes. In January 2018, it was revealed that he was leaving the show after the end of its seventh season.
Many viewers were shocked when Mike left Suits in season 7 since he was the show's central character, but his exit was a creative decision by actor Patrick J. Adams. In 2018, Adams told The Hollywood Reporter that he left Suits to spend more time with his wife, Troian Bellisario, a star of Pretty Little Liars.
The couple met in 2009, married in 2016, and had their first child in 2018. But wanting to spend more time with his family wasn't the only reason he exited the show. At the end of season 5, his character Mike goes to prison, and though he gets out in season 6, Adams feels this is a good point to end Mike's story.
Adams mentioned that he felt pressure after seven seasons, which meant eight years away from home and his wife. He started thinking about leaving the TV show during the first part of season 6 after Mike was released from prison.
Adams expressed that he wanted his departure to feel natural and true to his character and not have his tenure on Suits end in an out-of-place courtroom shootout or tragedy. Markle was leaving at the same time, and it made sense to give the on-screen couple a happy ending.
Adams stayed away for the entire season 8 but briefly reprised his character for the final season. Mike Ross made a few guest appearances in season 9, facing off against Harvey Spector and returning to New York one last time.
According to The Sun, Katherine Heigl (Samantha Wheeler) was introduced after Mike Ross left Suits. She is the talented and fierce lawyer who shakes things up at the law firm and fills Mike Ross’s position in the series.
Adams, who plays Mike, is not in season 8 because his character married Rachel, and they moved to Seattle to manage a legal clinic at the end of season 7. However, he returns for a few episodes in season 9, including the final one.
In the story, one of Mike's clients in Seattle gets him into a legal battle with Harvey, so he returns to New York to win the case. It also leads him to reconnect with his old mentor and team up against a character named Faye Richardson.
Adams later snagged roles in films like 2017's Room for Rent, 2018's Clara, and the 2022 reboot of A League of Our Own. He has also appeared in the 2022 Tony award-winning revival of Broadway's Take Me Out.
Why did Mike leave Suits? The decision was influenced by the actor's desire to spend more time with his family and a belief that his character's storyline had reached a natural conclusion. Mike's leaving Suits was a significant moment in the series that left many fans curious.
