A government official who is not authorised to speak to the press told TUKO.co.ke that 65,000 Kenyans had registered for the Climate Resilience Service Programme.

"65,000 people have already applied for the Climate WorX Mtaani Programme launched by President William Ruto," the official disclosed.

How many youths will be employed under Climate WorX Mtaani?

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the programme aims to employ 200,000 young men and women nationwide to develop critical infrastructure and environmental projects within their communities.

The first phase in Nairobi City will officially begin on October 1, 2024, with the hiring of 20,000 youth in the regeneration of the Nairobi River.

"The programme will then be extended to the four major cities - Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Nakuru, within a month. An additional 40,098 youth will be engaged, with 10,000 of them allocated to other areas of Nairobi starting in early November," Mohammed explained.

Registration is done online via the Climate Resilience Service Programme website.

Why did Ruto scrap Kazi Mtaani?

In 2022, President William Ruto scrapped the Kazi Mtaani initiative executed under Uhuru Kenyatta's administration, vowing to employ the youths in a tree-planting exercise.

He announced plans to plant five billion trees in five years to conserve the environment.

The president said he would initially use youths under the Kazi Mtaani programme to execute the tree-planting project.

Ruto noted that the youths would also be taking up jobs in the affordable housing programme, which is currently under his administration's stewardship.

However, in July this year, Ruto said he received a request from Kenyan youths to re-introduce the Kazi Mtaani initiative.
