American billionaire Elon Musk's electric car maker, Tesla, has recalled 1.85 million of its cars in the United States due to a software problem that could allow the hood to fully open and obscure a driver's view of the road.

Why Elon Musk's Tesla recalled cars

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a driver may crash due to obstructed vision resulting from an unlatched hood opening entirely.

Fox News reported that Tesla started distributing an over-the-air software update in mid-June to address the problem.

Thanks to the improved software, drivers are notified when a hood is open.

Which Tesla car models were recalled?

CBS News reported that the recalled cars were the 2021-2024 Model 3, 2021-2024 Model S, 2021-2024 Model X and 2020-2024 Model Y.

In late March, the Elon Musk-led carmaker started investigating customers' concerns about unexpected hood opening incidents in Model 3 and Model Y cars in China.

Tesla is releasing a free software update to fix the problem.

Which brands did Toyota recall?

TUKO.co.ke earlier reported that due to safety concerns, Japanese car manufacturer Toyota suspended the shipment of Fielder, Axio, and Yaris Cross models.

This came after Japan's Ministry of Transport found irregularities in the models. Also found to have safety concerns were Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha Motor.

The ministry ordered Toyota, Mazda and Yamaha to halt shipments of the affected models as it planned to inspect its headquarters.

Why Nissan warned customers

In a separate story, Nissan issued a “do not drive” order to 84,000 vehicle owners due to the risks of airbag explosions.

The years of manufacture of affected vehicles were between 2002 -2006.

Owners were urged to park vehicles immediately, with Nissan announcing free repairs for affected Takata airbag inflators.
