Nyeri: Patrick Gikandi, a parent at Hillside Endarasha Academy, recounted how his son managed to escape the nighttime fire that tragically claimed the lives of 18 pupils.
The devastating inferno also left 14 other students injured, all of whom are currently receiving medical attention in various hospitals.
Gikandi expressed his joy upon learning that his son was safe following the fire at their school on Thursday night, September 5.

"I was notified of the incident at school by a friend, who confirmed that my son and his son were fine. I am so grateful to God," he said.
While speaking to NTV, the parent said his son had miraculously woken up to use the bathroom when he spotted the fire.
He added that his son also heard some of the pupils in the dormitory screaming for help.
Gikandi's son quickly alerted other pupils who were not aware of the fire, even dropping his metal box to wake those still asleep.
"Those who were around him managed to respond when he raised an alarm and woke up quickly. That is how they left the dormitory that was on fire," Gikandi said.
Gikandi stated that he has no plans to transfer his child to another school, as he believes the incident was an accident.
"Only God protects us. Someone can die in other ways other than fire. So I will bring him back when they report to school," he added.
Another Nyeri family had painfully opened up about how they found out about the night fire at the academy where their kin studies.
John Muriithi, a pastor, said he learned about the fire at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 5. He was asleep when he heard the firefighters' sirens and woke up.
Muriithi said that the firefighters were already putting out the fire by the time they arrived.
Sadly, he is yet to find out if his grandson is alive or not.
