How the money was raised

M-Changa, an innovative mobile-based service, enabled seamless financial contributions from Kenyans in support of the movement, as the protests faced violent response from the police who lobbed teargas, water and bullets.

"Two months ago, Kenyans and people of goodwill contributed a total of KSh 31,663,580 in an Mchanga account dubbed “care for the injured” which I had created. My initial target was KSh 10 million, and I was in awe of the generosity and Kindness from everyone," Hanifa said on the X platform.
"Handling this was a test for me, I would break down in public toilets and scream under my pillow later. But my God, I would do it again and again if it means taking care of our comrades," she explained how witnessing the results of police brutality in hospitals took a toll on her.

How was Kenyan Gen Z money used?

According to the audited report, there were 208 beneficiaries. Hanifa noted that she recorded a total of 62 deaths and 146 injured around the country, and the money was used as shown below:

The report further explained that Mobi-Changa Limited charges a standard platform fee of 4.25% of funds raised to cover its expenses of receiving donations, communicating with donors, and authenticating and auditing causes.

"The platform fee for this fundraiser was KSh 1,345,702. Mobi-Changa Limited also charges 2.5% for individual donations made through credit and debit cards. The card processing fee for this fundraiser was KES 21,304, including a rebate passed on by the card processor. We noted that Mobi-Changa Limited's fees are inline and lower than similar platforms regionally which charge up to 10%', as well as globally where platforms charge up to 20%" the report read in part.

Activists demand release of abducted Kenyans

In other news on TUKO.co.ke, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga joined activists Boniface Mwangi, Hanifa Adan, and Hussein Khalid on Monday, June 24, to advocate for the release of abducted colleagues.

The four stormed the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road to complain about the illegal abductions of anti-Finance Bill protesters.

However, the three activists were arrested and ferried to the Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters in five Subaru vehicles.
