Meru - In a surprising political move, Murega Baichu, the husband of Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza, has announced his intention to challenge Meru senator Kathuri Murungi in the upcoming elections.
During a lively gathering in Mbaaria market, the artist-turned-politician expressed his readiness to enter the political arena and set his sights on unseating Murungi.
Baichu, who has been in the spotlight due to his wife’s political troubles, made it clear that he is prepared to contest for any position Murungi chooses to run for.

He explained that he would be ready to challenge the lawmaker for whatever seat he opted to vie for, including the gubernatorial seat.
"If Kathuri Murungi will run for a seat in 2027, that’s the seat I will also vie for. If he is running for MCA, let him run for MCA; that’s the seat I, Murega Baichu, will contest. If he runs for MP, that’s the seat I will also seek, and we’ll compete for it. If he continues to vie for the Senate seat of Meru county, we’ll be with him; I and Kathuri Murungi will compete head-to-head. Even if he decides to run for governor, I’ll vie against him in that race," Baicho declared amid cheers.
The development comes weeks after the Senate's confirmation of the impeachment of Mwangaza on Wednesday, August 21, a decision initially made by Meru MCAs.
The MCAs accused Mwangaza of abuse of office, gross misconduct, and violations of the constitution and other laws.
The Senate concluded its deliberations, with most leaders finding Mwangaza guilty on all counts.
The process was not without controversy, as some senators criticised Speaker Amason Kingi for not allowing enough time for voting, particularly for those attending the sessions virtually.
However, the High Court temporarily suspended Mwangaza's impeachment after she challenged the Senate plenary's decision late Tuesday, August 20, to uphold her removal from office.
